A few of my NEW favorite things!

Now that I am abstinent from caffeine, gluten, flour and sugar… just what the heck do I eat and drink?!  You see,  I enjoy my sweet tasting foods and I love to go out.  Except, I don’t want to go if I’m going  to be that pissy guy at the table all misrable because he can only have water and a side salad. I want options! So, I’m taking action! I’m on a quest to find great foods and beverages that fit in my meal plan. So here are a few of my NEW favorite things 🙂

1. Starbucks Passion Fruit Tea  (un-sweetened) –  Gone are the days of my Mocha Frappucino, Vente Iced Coffee and Carmel Macchiato. I will not morn, it’s time to move on! I love going to coffee shops because of the free wifi, hip baristas and… Nina Simone. What is it with coffee shops and Nina Simone? She’s cool… that’s what. Now, what to drink instead of the sugary cups of crack? I have discovered Starbucks Passion Tea. Well, its been around for awhile, I’m just now taking notice. It’s shaken then poured over ice (how classy) and it sparkles Ruby red. Ahhh, on these hot summer days it is a treat. I put a couple of Splendas in it to cut the bitterness, that’s what I do. This drink is caffeine, sugar and guilt free… So enjoy!

2. Apples Slices and Cinnamon The longer I go with out sugar the sweeter fruit is getting. I ate some orange slices last night and man were they sweet! Now, the great thing about cinnamon is that it’s a spice, just like paparika or cumin, not a sugar! After dinner I slice up some apples, sprinkle a little cinnamon and… Voila!  An inexpensive  heart healthy desert fit for the whole family.

By the way, studies have shown that just 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon per day can lower LDL cholesterol. Several studies suggest that cinnamon may have a regulatory effect on blood sugar, making it especially beneficial for people with Type 2 diabetes. Food for thought 🙂

3. JELL-O’s Mousse Temptations (Carmel Creme) – Yum Yum! This desert is sugar and gluten free. Score! Okay… Okay, a word of warning first. I asked SOH about sugar free deserts. They said, “Be careful! They could become a trigger.” So heed this warning, if you start in on some good sugar free grub and you start craving the real thing… Stop! What you are eating is a trigger. For me, I enjoy this desert. I have one, ONE cup after dinner. I don’t recommend the chocolate, it has that chemical taste. However, the Carmel Creme is where it’s at! Let me know if you agree!

It hasn’t even been a week since my 6 day intensive… so I need to hit the restaurants! I plan on meeting with restaurant managers, Chef’s and Grociers to ask them, “What you got that I can eat? And make it good!”
